Eagers Automotive says IT outage stems from cyber incident

The ASX-listed company entered a trading halt earlier in the week [pdf], saying only that it was needed to manage “continuous disclosure obligations in relation to a cyber incident”.

Eagers yesterday provided a bit more information on the incident it is dealing with, saying that an “outage is currently impacting our IT systems in some operating locations across Australia and New Zealand”.

“The full extent of the cyber incident cannot yet be ascertained,” it said in an updated ASX filing. [pdf]

“External experts have been appointed to support our response and an urgent investigation is underway.

“The company has notified the Australian Cyber Security Centre and the New Zealand National Cyber Security Centre.”

In a further statement Friday [pdf], Eagers said that the disruption is unevenly affecting its dealerships.

"While the majority of our dealerships remain open and continue to trade, the extent of the operational impact of the outage is varied across our regions and business units," the company said.

"The disruption is primarily impacting our ability to finalise transactions for certain new vehicles which have been sold and [are] ready for delivery, and some aspects of the company's service and parts operations."

Eagers said that some sales made in late December would now be recognised "in the 2024 financial year, once they have been appropriately finalised in our systems".

The deferred sales are not expected to have a material impact on its 2023 financial year results.

Eagers said it had not been able to establish whether or not personally identifiable information (PII) of customers was impacted.
